Could this be a $99 Nexus 7?
Asus has been enjoying plenty of success with the Nexus 7, which continues to sell out on the Google Play Store as we approach the holiday season. It’s no surprise, then, that the Taiwanese company is working on another budget Android tablet. According to new benchmarks, the device will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on a mysterious 1GHz processor.
It’s unclear how many cores that 1GHz processor will have; in fact, there’s very little we know about the device at this point. But here’s what the benchmarks tell us.
In addition to the 1GHz processor, the tablet features a Mali 400 GPU — the same GPU in Samsung’s Exynos 4 chips — and a 1024×552 (likely 1024×600) display. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and it’s codenamed the Asus ME172V.
Although there’s a possibility this could be another Nexus tablet — possibly a super cheap $99 version — some reports claim the device will launch with a microSD card slot, which kind of rules out that possibility.
Whatever the device may be, given the excellent job Asus has done with the Nexus 7, this is something to look forward to — especially if you’re in the market for a budget Android tablet. When it will appear, however, remains unclear
