BALTIMORE (93-7 THE FAN) — Third-string quarterback Charlie Batch was able to perform surgery under duress in Baltimore Sunday because the Steelers, despite chronic injury woes up front, made sure he was well protected.
“You could acknowledge the contributions of a lot of people–Beachum, obviously, being a young guy, Maurkice Pouncey playing guard, and many, many, others. But that’s what teams do,” head coach Mike Tomlin said after his offense allowed only two sacks and outgained the Ravens in Sunday’s 23-20 win at M&T Bank Stadium. “That’s what tight teams do. That’s what–potentially–good teams do. Hopefully, that’s revealing regarding us.”
Pouncey, who agreed to a temporary switch to left guard, was playing said position for the first time since his freshman year at Florida, making Doug Legursky the de facto center, and Kelvin Beachum, having originally come off the bench last Sunday in Cleveland, made his first NFL start.
Somehow, some way, they meshed, and tight end Heath Miller did his part as well, not only keeping Batch upright, but catching from him his seventh TD pass of the season–a career high.

The Steelers (7-5), owners of the last playoff spot in the AFC, will try to take another step closer to the postseason when San Diego (4-8) comes to Heinz Field next Sunday at 1:00.
