GLASSPORT (KDKA) — Police in Glassport are changing how they do things and residents are being asked to keep their eyes open as authorities continue to investigate a string of recent fires.
"Here we go again" is what some people thought when the siren of a fire truck roared through the community Tuesday evening.
Turns out, it was a gas leak and not a fire. Nevertheless, people are on edge.
"It's scary because the town is old, there’s a lot of old people and you just got to look out for one another," said Lori Pons, a Glassport resident.
It was just before 11 p.m. Monday when an abandoned church caught fire. An hour and a half later, there was a fire at a garage but it was quickly put out.
Then, right down the block, a row of three other garages caught fire. The heat was intense enough to melt the siding on a nearby home.
"This was pretty quick," said Glassport Mayor Michael Evanovich. "They did three places in about two hours – that’s pretty much an arsonist."
Fire investigators do say there are suspicious circumstances.
Dave Homlotis had two vehicles in one of the garages that burned
"I just looked out the window and seen everything on fire," he said. "I just ran out and tried to save my car. I knew the truck was gone."
The mayor says police will patrol differently overnight.
"Changing some of our patrol patterns, and doing some designated in certain areas," said Mayor Evanovich. "Hopefully, this is the end, but we have to be vigilant enough to think it could happen again."
