PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – More than 1,000 people took to the Ohio River to raise money for the Special Olympics Sunday.

At 1 p.m., they jumped into the near-freezing waters of the river as part of the "Pittsburgh Polar Plunge" fundraiser.

Event officials said 1,300 people were expected to take the plunge, including KDKA-TV's own Heather Abraham, Jon Burnett and Ross Guidotti.

A smaller group of 15 people plunged every hour from noon Friday to noon Saturday to show support for Special Olympics.

Each "plunger" raised at least $50 for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, which provides training and competitions to roughly 20,000 children and adults with disabilities.

Similar events are held all over the country and have raised millions of dollars for special Olympics over the years.
