Kindergarteners Found By Police After Leaving School

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The families of three young children are furious.

They're worried about what could have happened to their kindergarteners who left school Tuesday morning.

The three 5-year-olds were later found walking down a busy road by themselves.

About 9 a.m., the kindergarteners walked out the door at Mifflin Elementary School in Lincoln Place. One mother, Jennifer Eisel, found her son in the back of a police car.

"I feel confident about him going to school," Eisel said. "And by 10-o-clock, I'm getting a call from the Pittsburgh Police saying, 'is this your son? We have him.'"

Pittsburgh Police picked up Eisel's son and two other 5-year-olds at Interboro Avenue.

They walked out unnoticed through an unlocked, unsupervised front door.

The children were found an hour later.

"And nobody knows they left the school," Eisel said. "So, this afternoon, I would have went to the bus stop and my kid could be missing right now."

The school district says it goofed and is looking through security. It also said it will talk to children about walking away and will send letters to all parents.

"I'm emotionally distraught," Eisel said. "I don't want to send them to school now, because I don't know if it's safe."

Eisel's son Dominic told KDKA's Marty Griffin that he and the other children left to have a sleep over.

Eisel said if she had fallen asleep and her son walked out of the front door, she would have been arrested and wants serious changes for the school.

The school says it's going over new security measures and is in talks with the principal. It's also going to bring in counselors to talk to children in the school.
