PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The hearing for a West Virginia woman accused of suffocating her baby was postponed again.
Testimony started, but abruptly ended in the hearing for Rachel Nelson, who allegedly tried to suffocate her 4-month-old baby, while he was a patient at UPMC Children's Hospital last month.
The hearing was supposed to start Wednesday after it had already been postponed due to mental evaluations to find out if Nelson was competent enough to undergo the legal process.
However, the judge postponed the hearing again until Jan. 9 because the defense objected to a doctor's testimony, whom it said was not the original doctor that wrote a report on Nelson.
The judge ordered that the original doctor be consulted for the new hearing, but the prosecution says it thinks the doctor used for Wednesday's hearing was adequate.
Nelson is also accused of squeezing the baby against her chest until it couldn't breathe at her home in Boone County.
Officials said last week that they believe Nelson could have smothered the baby similarly as many as 15 times between August and October.
