PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Monday marks a big day for deer hunters.
It's the start of deer season.
About 750,000 hunters are expected to head out during the next two weeks.
But this year, there will be extra restrictions.
Hunters traveling to York or Adams counties must take any deer they shoot to a checkpoint to see if it tests positive for chronic wasting disease.
Two deer on a farm have died from it, but so far it hasn't spread to the wild deer population.
Officials want to keep it in check, because it's fatal to elk, moose and deer.
It can not be transmitted to humans, but hunters are encouraged to shoot only healthy-looking animals and wear gloves.
Hunters can also take part in a program called "Hunters Sharing the Harvest," in which locally hunted deer is processed and donated to food banks.
