CBS Pittsburgh: Hunters Head Into Woods For Start Of Season Nov 26th 2012, 12:32 CBS Pittsburgh News, Sports, Weather, Traffic and the Best of Pittsburgh Hunters Head Into Woods For Start Of Season Nov 26th 2012, 12:24 PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Thousands of hunters are expected to head into the woods Monday morning to mark the start of the gun deer hunting season. For decades, the Monday following Thanksgiving has marked the start of the season and more than 750,000 hunters are expected to head into the woods today. Today has been called an unofficial holiday because many people will take the day off and some school districts even close. York and Adams Counties will be subject to extra restrictions as state wildlife officials work to ensure that the white tail deer population has no contracted a deadly disease. Hunters in a 600 square-mile area are required to take their carcass to a checkpoint to be checked for chronic wasting disease. The disease cannot be transmitted to humans, but it can be fatal to deer, moose and elk.
