Phil Schiller Says The iPad Mini Is More Expensive Because People Want Quality
Oct 24th 2012, 16:05

The iPad mini is a great looking device and all that, but people seemed to be pretty disappointed in the price point. While other 7-inch tablets usually start out in the $200-$250 price range, the iPad mini costs $329 for the base model.

After the keynote yesterday, journalists were given an opportunity to play with the newly announced Apple products, while Tim Cook and Phil Schiller mingled with the crowd. When asked about the higher-than-expected price tag of the iPad mini, and Schiller’s response was that people will pay more for a high quality product.

Reuters asked Phil Schiller if the iPad mini’s price could make it too expensive for some shoppers who think the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire are decent options at a cheap price point.

“The iPad is far and away the most successful product in its category. The most affordable product we’ve made so far was $399 and people were choosing that over those devices,” Schiller said.

“And now you can get a device that’s even more affordable at $329 in this great new form, and I think a lot of customers are going to be very excited about that,”

Even though people have complained about the price of the iPad mini, Schiller does have a strong point that you’re getting a quality product at a cheaper price than even an iPad 2.  The iPad mini only cost $329, while the iPad 2 costs $399. When you think about it, the iPad mini is just like the iPad 2, only smaller, so with the iPad mini you’re getting a cheaper version of the iPad 2 because it’s screen is smaller.

We expect Apple will probably still sell millions of iPad minis this holiday season because it’s the perfect first tablet for kids, and it only cost $30 more than an iPod Touch.
