CBS Pittsburgh: Family, Friends Hold Vigil, Balloon Release In 2-Month-Old's Memory Dec 8th 2012, 04:50 CBS Pittsburgh News, Sports, Weather, Traffic and the Best of Pittsburgh Family, Friends Hold Vigil, Balloon Release In 2-Month-Old's Memory Dec 8th 2012, 04:33 PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A candlelight vigil and a balloon release were held Friday night in a park in Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, in memory of 8-week-old Sophia Ludwiczak. Police said she was the victim of "shaken baby syndrome." The baby's father, 30-year old Matthew Milisits, is in jail. He is facing charges of homicide and endangering the welfare of a child. Investigators said Milisits admitted to allegedly shaking the 2-month-old to try to get her to stop crying while the two were home alone at his home in Vandergrift last month. The infant was taken to UPMC Children's Hospital where she died four days after being taken off life support. The blue and purple balloons released on Friday symbolize child abuse and shaken baby syndrome. Sophia's mother, Samantha Ludwiczak, spoke at the vigil, telling KDKA-TV that Sophia "was the best baby ever." Ludwiczak said, "We want to thank everyone for their support and prayers, and we want justice for Sophia." The mother said she misses her baby every day. Milisits is being held in the Westmoreland County Jail. He faces a hearing Jan. 23. Impressively. They won Friday’s game against Port Allegany 44-12. This makes 62 consecutive wins for the Bears, the longest winning streak in America for high school football. They’ll now play for the state title. The team is attracting national attention for a town that’s had a rough go. Clairton, of course, was hit hard when steel mill jobs left. Storefronts were boarded up. The CBS Evening News featured the team and the town this week. USA Today also profiled the Clairton Bears. “We’re a depressed area right now,” said Davlin Mullen. “This is what we live for. We work all week… and wait on Friday nights.” If Clairton wins the state championship, it will be the team’s fourth consecutive state title. CBS Pittsburgh: Man Killed, Woman Wounded In North Side Shooting Dec 8th 2012, 04:15 CBS Pittsburgh News, Sports, Weather, Traffic and the Best of Pittsburgh Man Killed, Woman Wounded In North Side Shooting Dec 8th 2012, 04:08 PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — One man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting Friday night in an apartment in Pittsburgh's Spring Hill neighborhood on the North Side. The shooting happened in the 2100-block of Rhine Street. Lt. Michael Piasecki said three men knocked on the door of the apartment, demanded money, and then they barged inside and started shooting. Piasecki said the woman was shot in the head and arm. She was hospitalized in critical condition. No description of the gunmen was released late Friday. The names of the shooting victims were not released; however, one neighbor said the man who was killed was a long-time resident of an apartment in the Three Rivers Manor housing project. Lt. Piasecki said police found drug paraphernalia inside the apartment when they went inside.
