IBM Envisions Watson As a Super Smart Version of Siri On Your Smartphone
Aug 31st 2012, 16:31

In Watson 2.0, IBM plans to bring the supercomputer to smartphones worldwide.

Could IBM’s Watson replace Siri? That’s an interesting question and IBM’s answer appears to be yes. Big Blue is working to turn the supercomputing solution that made news when it beat Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter into an app that could run on a smartphone. If successful, IBM will turn Watson into a supercharged version of Apple’s digital assistant. Bernie Meyerson, IBM vice president of innovation, sees a voice-activated Watson as being something that everyone could use. In talking to SFGate reporter Sarah Frier, Meyerson described one scenario of how Watson might act like a much smart sibling to Siri.

A farmer could stand in a field and ask his phone, “When should I plant my corn?” He would get a reply in seconds, based on location data, historical trends and scientific studies.

That’s an incredible synthesis of information, but Watson is proving that it is capable of making such predictions. It’s certainly well beyond Siri’s current ability to tell you whether you need an umbrella and it’s even beyond Siri’s enhanced functionality in iOS 6, although from a user perspective, it’s essentially an extension of Siri’s functionality.

Siri, for example, will be able to tell you the score in a face-off between the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. Watson would be able to tell you the current score and predict the final score and the winner based the starting lineup, injury reports, past experiences of each team and each player, and could even incorporate the weather conditions as a factor.

Currently, Watson is still be used in pretty specialized ways by IBM customers. Citigroup is using Watson to crunch financial data and WellPoint has Watson analyzing cancer data. Both are extremely complex and they are also very specific.

Crunching data for the everyday needs of smartphone owners might seem like simpler calculations, but the fact is that Watson needs time to learn about the data that it’s processing. IBM’s deal with WellPoint was announced last September and the companies don’t expect Watson to be fully aware of oncology as a field of medicine until sometime late next year.  Imagine that kind of learning curve applied to NFL teams, farm data, and thousands upon thousands of random questions that individuals would ask Watson if it was immediately accessible in the way that Siri is on the iPhone 4S – would Watson understand how to respond to the first few people who asked it open the pod bay doors?

Beyond understanding the data, there are other questions. Some are easy, like giving Watson speech and image recognition capabilities. Some are a bit harder. Watson already consumes a huge amount of energy at its home in a Yorktown Heights, N.Y. data center. Adding the capacity to handle queries from users around the world would require significantly more power. There’s also the question or priority – Watson’s taking questions about a football game, for example, should not be able reduce its capacity to analyze potentially life-saving medical data. Beyond all those questions is another important one – how would IBM distribute Watson 2.0 to a global community and how would the company monetize it?

Those questions aside, one iPad application of Watson already exists – a health care program developed with a Columbia University professor is being used to demonstrate Watson potential medical capabilities to prospective IBM customers. Those capabilities, according to IBM’s chief medical scientist Martin Kohn, could include diagnosis and treatment options for various forms of cancer once Watson has finished learning about oncology.

This mockup from ExtremeTech shows the potential for Watson replacing Siri.

Ultimately, IBM may face more criticism over a smartphone version of Watson than Apple has over Siri’s inability to understand many questions. Watson, after all, has proved itself to be more capable and more intelligent than Siri. That means users would expect or demand a much higher level of accuracy and success.

A new program that will allow certain undocumented immigrants to live and work in the United States has shed light on the plight of the many Asians who consider themselves Americans but don't have legal documentation. "Mr. High School Sports" – Quick Outs: Class AAAA Foothills Conference Outlook
Aug 31st 2012, 14:24

By Matt Popchock

(mpopchock@kdka.com)

On the night of Friday, August 31, the 107th season of WPIAL football shall begin. With 125 teams across 14 conferences and four classifications to discuss, it's time to get excited.

We're going to keep our preseason coverage going with a series of rapid-fire previews, focusing on the Foothills Conference in Class AAAA, which has stayed chiefly intact through biennial realignment in the district. Furthermore, the WPIAL title candidacy of Gateway, which has dominated the conference for years, remains as strong as ever.

The pursuit of the Gators should be more fascinating with the consolidation of Quad-A into just three conferences, which means a fifth playoff spot has been made available. While Gateway has set the bar uniquely high, others dream of getting a rare taste of postseason play.

Here's what to look for when the 2012 season starts:

A QUICK LOOK BACK:

*-Penn-Trafford: 6-0, 10-1

*-Gateway: 5-1, 9-3

*-McKeesport: 4-2, 6-4

*-Connellsville: 3-3, 5-5

Latrobe: 2-4, 5-4

Hempfield: 1-5, 1-8

Norwin: 0-6, 0-9

*-Penn-Trafford entered playoffs as No. 4 seed; defeated Bethel Park 21-0 in WPIAL Class AAAA First Round, lost to Gateway 34-9 in WPIAL Class AAAA Quarterfinals.

*-Gateway entered playoffs as No. 5 seed; defeated Shaler 52-13 in WPIAL Class AAAA First Round, defeated Penn-Trafford 34-9 in WPIAL Class AAAA Quarterfinals, lost to North Allegheny 21-17 in WPIAL Class AAAA Semifinals.

*-McKeesport entered playoffs as No. 11 seed; lost to Erie McDowell 42-7 in WPIAL Class AAAA First Round.

*-Connellsville entered playoffs as No. 14 seed; lost to Upper St. Clair 42-0 in WPIAL Class AAAA First Round.

A QUICK LOOK AHEAD:

We sing the praises of the Gators because they once again feature the most imminent Division I talent and possible Division I talent on both sides of the ball. In addition, Gateway might be the most motivated team in this conference after longtime coach Terry Smith was nearly fired over the summer, and remains the center of a turbulent job situation.

Senior all-conference tailback Darin Franklin is ready for an encore after a junior season that saw him rack up over 800 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns, which put him among the Class AAAA top five in total scoring.

2 Mr. High School Sports Quick Outs: Class AAAA Foothills Conference Outlook

He’ll be running in front of tight end and Pitt commit Jaymar Parrish, another all-conference selection who will also bolster the defensive line. Quarterback and Arizona recruit Tom Woodson balances the offense after finishing 2011 with nearly 1,500 all-purpose yards.

Gateway was the least scored-upon team in Quad-A last year, and that defense, despite the fact 22 seniors are gone, it can still beat up opponents. Terry Smith could get that elusive ring after all, which would be nothing short of a feel-good story.

The most capable challenger to Gateway is still McKeesport, as the Tigers are ready to launch an aerial assault on the rest of the Foothills Conference. That thought seemed unthinkable when George Smith was still around, but Jim Ward has done a solid job groom senior quarterback and Akron recruit Ed Stockett, who tossed 17 TD passes and threw for over 1,700 yards, ranking third in Class AAAA in 2011. He’ll have almost a brand new starting offense around him, and when you consider over 30 seniors are gone, McKeesport needs to stay healthier than most in order to survive.

Penn-Trafford must also endure significant roster turnover to return to the playoffs. Senior quarterback Matt Arzenti will get help in the passing game from senior receivers Brian McDonough and Mike Cumberledge, but this will be a rebuilding year for the Warriors. Norwin is still going through this process, as senior running back Zach Tinsley is one of the few starters the Knights return with noticeable varsity experience, and former WPIAL champion Rich Bowen is going to enjoy working with senior running back/defensive back Joey DeFloria as he takes on the work-in-progress at Hempfield.

Meanwhile, after losing quarterback J.J. Consentino to an eligibility ruling, Kiski Area will move forward with senior Tim Ragan, and Altoona, another program still on the mend, will hand the reins over to senior Matt Dry, expected to see his first action as a starting QB. Don’t be surprised to see Ray Reitz experiment with a new quarterback either, even though Latrobe does return an experienced junior, Logan Carns. The Wildcats will try to mix it up with senior rusher Robert Vasinko, who could help them grab a playoff spot if the line play is consistent and if some of his teammates can learn from early varsity exposure.

Connellsville probably attracted a few closet fans en route to a 2011 playoff berth that ended a long streak of futility, and many of you are probably wondering if the Falcons, like Latrobe, can potentially be a fringe playoff team again. It’s going to be tough without a proven source of offense, but junior quarterback Jade Maher will give it his best behind an offensive line of mostly juniors.

Samsung Executives Waited Four Days Before Telling Chairman They Lost To Apple
Aug 31st 2012, 13:38

Fearing the fury of your boss after a really crappy performance isn’t unique to any profession. No one wants to make the big kahuna angry, and see them go nuts. Samsung’s executives tried to take the “maybe the chairman won’t be so mad if we wait a few days to tell him the bad news” approach. It didn’t work.

Last Friday, Samsung received the verdict that Apple won the patent lawsuit in the U.S., but top executives at the company waited four days before telling the company chairman Lee Kun-hee the bad news because they were afraid how he might react. Apparently, he freaked out a bit.

The Korea Times reports that after he heard the bad news Samsung’s highest ranking executive officer, got pretty upset, and had to be calmed down.

“The chairman calmed down and slightly closed his eyes after he was briefed. But he didn’t say anything further.”

What he did and said before he had to be calmed down is anyone’s guess. What do you think the Chairman said to his executive team? Maybe he threw ninja-stars at them, I dunno. I just wish I was in that meeting to witness the verbal lashing he probably gave them.

Two New iPad Minis Spotted In Instapaper Developer Logs
Aug 31st 2012, 13:23

Has Apple been running Instapaper on the iPad mini?

iOS developer Marco Arment has discovered two new iPads — believed to be two iterations of the upcoming iPad mini — in his Instapaper developer logs. The devices have the “iPad2,5″ and “iPad2,6″ model numbers, according to their operating system, which haven’t been seen before, and could point to Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + cellular versions of the device.

While Arment notes that these model numbers could have been faked by a jailbreak tweak, he insists that he has “never had a device show up there that didn't end up being a real, about-to-be-released Apple device.” He’s quite confident, then, that this is indeed Apple’s upcoming iPad mini.

What isn’t quite clear right now, however, is what these iterations point to. While they could point to GSM and CDMA versions of the device, Arment believes this is unlikely:

The iPad2,5 and iPad2,6 could be boring: GSM and CDMA versions of the die-shrunk iPad 2 so the shrink isn't only available on the Wi-Fi model, bringing lower costs to the other iPad 2 configurations that are still for sale. But now, even later in its lifecycle, that would be a pretty strange move.

The much more likely explanation is that iPad2,5 and iPad2,6 are the new "iPad Mini" in Wi-Fi and GSM, and I haven't recorded the likely iPad2,7 CDMA version yet.

If so, this suggests that the iPad Mini is, effectively, an iPad 2: an A5 with 512 MB of RAM and enough GPU power to drive the Gruber Display, but not a Retina Display.

The “Gruber Display” Arment refers to is the same 1024 x 768 display that featured in the iPad 2, shrunk down to fit inside a 7.85-inch device.

As Arnent notes, this approach makes perfect sense. Apple would take the components it has already developed for a previous iPad, then sell them again at a lower price point to expand the iPad’s market share even further. But this isn’t just a cut-price, last-generation iPad. It might feature roughly the same internals, but they’re packed into a new iOS device that is launching for the first time.
