ORMOND BEACH -- Commissioners on Tuesday will conduct the first of two readings of the city's proposed budget.
The total proposed operating budget for the city is about $72.8 million -- about $10.9 million less than the current year.
The budget, however, also calls for a proposed tax rate 12 cents higher than the current rate.
The proposed tax rate is $4.01 per $1,000 of taxable value compared to the current rate of $3.89. After tacking on debt service payments, however, the total tax rate stands to be $4.32.
The proposed rate is not considered a tax hike because it is the rolled-back rate, which would bring in the same amount of revenue as the current year based on new assessments of the same properties.
Under the proposed rate, a homeowner with a $150,000 home and a $50,000 homestead exemption will pay about $432 in city taxes.
A second reading and adoption of the budget is scheduled for Sept. 18.
Tuesday's meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the commission chambers at City Hall, 22 S. Beach St.
