Who needs a stupid dumb camera any more?
Just when you thought it was safe to enter a camera store without being assaulted by megapixel madness and other “feeds and speeds,” Samsung goes and adds a new tech race to the game. Processor speed. Its impressive new camera, the Galaxy Camera, comes with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, and looks like the future of compact camera design, packing an Android 4.1 Jellybean computer.
More specs: The screen is a huge (by camera standards at least) 4.8-inches, and this alone might be reason enough to buy it. There’s a massive 21x zoom (231481mm equivalent) and a top ISO of 3200. 1080p video and 8GB on-board storage round out the basics.
Perhaps the biggest news, though, is that the camera not only has Wi-Fi but 3G (or optional 4G). Sure, you’ll need a data plan for the thing, and you can’t make calls, but as far as I know this is the first camera to offer true always-on connectivity. There’s no need to find a Wi-Fi hotspot to Instagram your pictures, for example.
The press release lacks a price, which makes me wonder just how this will be sold. Will it come from your carrier, subsidized with a contract and data plan? Or will it come like the iPad, sold at full price?
Things could also get a little weird if you own a decent phone already. This camera is pretty much a Galaxy SIII with a better camera, and no phone. Who wants to carry both?
Still, Samsung is in a unique position in that it is a successful phone maker, and also a successful camera maker. And this combo looks pretty sweet.
