Earbuds and sunglasses, two things that sit up on your head and hang from your ears. If only there was some way to combine the two…
Oakley tried it some years ago with the Thump, which resulted in one of the most hideous product designs ever conceived — if H.R Giger had re-imagined between-toe fungus as an alien growth across your eyes and temples, it would have looked like the Thump.
Luckily, Sanpei Optics has come to the rescue with this gadget, which takes a normal-looking pair of shades and a normal-looking set of earbuds and simply sticks them together.
The design is ingenious. The glasses have hinged temple bars (what you and I call “arms”) which let the rear part move around. Clip in the removable buds, shift the arms around to fit and pop the buds in your ears. The design means that you can wear the shades with or without the headphones, or just use one earphone. This last will be useful should you ever find yourself spending a saturday afternoon at an outdoor wedding while your team is playing an important game.
The Sanpei shades are now being hawked on Indiegogo, which is the low rent version of Kickstarter. The final price will be $150, but you can pitch $90 and get the same thing as an early-bird contributor.
