Guinean Opposition Protests Makeup of Electoral Commission
Oct 31st 2012, 16:00

Guinea's opposition is protesting the makeup of the electoral commission, appealing to the country's highest court and threatening street demonstrations.  It is the latest phase in the sometimes violent battle between the ruling party and the opposition over long-overdue legislative polls. The Guinean government this week announced the membership of the independent electoral commission, which must be in place so the country can move forward with a long-delayed parliamentary ...

Mars Soil Similar to Hawaiian Volcanic Soil
Oct 31st 2012, 17:00

The soil on Mars appears to be very similar to the volcanic soils of Hawaii, according to scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA. The results come after the first chemical and mineralogy tests performed on Martian soil scooped up and taken aboard NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity. NASA said the soil analysis was carried out by the rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin). The U.S. space agency said the study concluded that the Mars soil sample "is ...

Game On For The iPad Mini: Google's Nexus 7 Selling At Close To 1 Million Units Per Month
Oct 31st 2012, 15:54

The Kindle Fire/Fire HD and Nexus 7 have given birth to a small, yet powerful, sub-category of affordable 7-inch tablets. One that has been slowly eating away at a market that has been dominated by the much larger Apple iPad. To battle this growing trend, Apple decided to break down — after vowing to never to make a 7-inch tablet — and create a smaller version of their highly successful iPad line. Apple’s iPad Mini may not be a 7-inch tablet (it’s 7.9-inches), but it’s clear Apple’s intentions are to disrupt the sales of those pesky 7-inch competitors out there who keep chipping away at their market share.

There’s no arguing against the fact that both the Kindle Fire line and Nexus 7 have shared some success, however, due to the fact that both Amazon and ASUS/Google remain secretive on actual sales figures, it’s hard to tell what exactly it is that Apple’s up against.

While I fully expect Amazon to continue their unfounded “Kindle Fire HD sales have tripled!” statements, I believe Google and ASUS will paint a more realistic picture of what the iPad Mini is up against, and in fact, they have.

Following a third-quarter earnings conference, Asustek Chief Financial Officer David Chang shed some light on Nexus 7 sales figures. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Chang had this to say:

"At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million"

While those numbers certainly aren’t astounding, they’re quite successful for an Android tablet market that’s been dismal at best.

Now Apple, with their iPad Mini, are given a magic number to aim at and annihilate. As long as Apple can show that the iPad Mini is selling more than 1 million units a month, they can claim once again that they know what consumers want.

This new market battle will be fun to watch, and while I’m obviously in the Nexus 7 camp, I’m all for the competition and can’t wait to see what kind of future products this rivalry spawns.

Three Awesome Last Minute Apple Halloween Costume Ideas [Feature]
Oct 31st 2012, 16:09

There are only a few hours left until the entire country goes jettisons itself into a deranged mess of Halloween parties. If you don’t have your costume ready by now then you might be panicing about coming up with something cool on the fly.

Don’t worry. We’ve got three great Apple-themed Halloween costume ideas that you can pull of in minutes before you head to your parties tonight. Check ‘em out.

Steve Jobs

Dressing up like Steve Jobs is so easy, even Ashton Kutcher can do it. All you need to pull of this costume is a black turtleneck, jeans, and sneakers. If you have some glasses as well that will help make your costume more concrete, but even without glasses people will understand that you’re Steve Jobs in like two seconds.

Once you’re ready to head to some parties or go trick-or-treating, just grab an Apple product and traipse around shouting hyperbolic adjectives and you’ll be golden.

Siri

If you’re a lady and don’t really want to dive into a bunch of costume garb, a Siri costume will take you minutes to make, and you can still look hot as hell.

Throw on a black dress and then print out this large image of the Siri icon. Cut the picture out and pin it to your dress and BOOM! now you’re Siri. Roam the corridors of your party asking people, “What can I help you with?” Make sure to toss in a few ridiculously wrong answers every now and then, or pretend you “didn’t quite get that” to maintain authenticity.

Mister Macintosh

Not everyone’s heard of Mister Macintosh, but he’s one of the coolest pieces of Apple lore, which basically means that a Mister Macintosh costume is the ultimate Apple costume because even hardcore fanboys probably don’t know who he is.

Here’s how Steve Jobs described Mister Macintosh:

“Mr. Macintosh is a mysterious little man who lives inside each Macintosh. He pops up every once in a while, when you least expect it, and then winks at you and disappears again.”

To pull the costume off dress in all white with a baggy shirt. Tuck your chin into your collar and wear a brimmed hat and voila, you have instantly transformed yourself into Mister Macintosh. People will ask you who you are and you can drop a mad dosage of Apple trivia straight into their craniums.

'The Nails' Is An Incredibly Scary Horror Movie Shot Entirely On An iPhone [Halloween Video]
Oct 31st 2012, 16:38

Over the course of the last five years, there have been a lot of movies with the gimmick that they have been shot on the iPhone, but few have pulled it off as well as this incredibly scary little short film made by Clement Deneux for the 2012 Disposable Film Festival, a film festival dedicated to short films shot on smartphones and either pocketable cameras.

It’s called Les Ongles, or The Nails, and it would be a discredit to describe the plot in much detail, except to say it’s a found-footage-style short that takes place during a party in Paris in which one guest is compelled to quit a nasty habit. You’re going to want to watch this.

Les Ongles won first prize at the Disposable Film Festival, and no wonder. Trust us: this is awesome, the perfect movie for Halloween. It’s probably not work safe, though, for violence and supernatural horror (although no sex and nudity), so be careful watching this in front of your boss.

Happy Halloween from Cult of Mac!

Lookout App Tracks Your iPhone Even When The Battery Is Dead
Oct 31st 2012, 16:30

Lookout is like Apple’s Find My iPhone app, only it adds a whole bunch of extra features. It’ll let you track your lost phone from any web browser, even when the battery has dies (kinda), and it also adds a slew of features that only the dumbest of people will need.

First, the useful stuff. The app will let you track your device on a map, as well as send an alert to make it beep, just like Apple’s app. The clever part is that it uploads your current location when your battery gets low, so if the power finally goes out then you can still track the last known location. This isn’t so useful if it’s stolen, but if you leave you iPhone someplace then it might just be a killer feature.

Then we come onto the dumb features. The app will inform you of the following: whether your iPhone is jailbroken (you might already know this), and whether you are connected to an unsecured network (did you enter a password to join this network? Then it’s likely unsecured).

It’ll also back up your contacts. You know, just like iCloud does for free, and without having to trust yet another service provider with your data.

Sound good? Then you can grab the app –free — from the App Store today. And if you have an Android phone, the same app has been around for a while.

Apple Stock Price Drops 2.4% In Reaction To Management Changes
Oct 31st 2012, 16:35

Even though the news that Apple fired Scott Forstall and John Browett was released on Monday, investors didn’t have an opportunity to react to the new changes in management thanks the the stock markets being closed due to hurricane Sandy.

The markets opened today for the first time all week and investors showed that they’re not feeling incredibly optimistic about Apple right now. Apple’s stock price dropped about 2.4% and was trading at $589.60 this morning, which is the lowest price the stock has seen since July.

The drop in Apple’s stock price isn’t just related to the changes in Apple’s management though. Forbes notes a few other reasons why the stock has taken a small dip, such as iPhone 5 sales falling short of the wild estimations of analysts, the Apple Maps fiasco, September quarter profits being lower than expected, and a warning from Apple that gross margins are going to fall sharply in the December quarter.

Concerns about Apple being able to maintain their competitive edge against companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft might be squashed this week once the iPad mini goes on sale. If Apple reports strong initial sales of the iPad mini after the weekend launch, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the stock price jump back up on Monday.
