Taiwanese Government Asks Apple To Conceal Its New Missile Defense System In Maps

Hsinchu Air Base in Taiwan.

Looks like iOS 6 users aren’t the only ones unhappy with Apple’s new Maps app. The Taiwanese government is also complaining about the service, which reveals its new $1.4 billion early warning radar station in satellite view. The Defense Ministry is now asking the Cupertino company to obscure the images.

Most of us are calling for Apple to clear up its satellite images — which are blurry and pixelated in a lot of places. But the Taiwanese government is doing the opposite.

Defense Ministry spokesperson David Lo has asked Apple to blur the satellite images of its new missile defense facility, which is located near the Hsinchu Air Base in northern Taiwan. However, Lo admits that legally, it cannot force Apple to do anything.

“Regarding images taken by commercial satellites, legally we can do nothing about it,” Lo told reporters. “But we’ll ask Apple to lower the resolution of satellite images of some confidential military establishments the way we’ve asked Google in the past.”

A search for Hsinchu already returns clouded images around the air base. However, it’s unclear whether Apple has done this intentionally, or whether this is just another Maps glitch.

Phys.Org reports that the Hsinchu base is home to a ultra-high-frequency long-range radar, supplied by U.S. defense group Raytheon, which is capable of detecting missiles launched as far away as Xinjiang in China’s northwest. It’s designed to give Taiwan warning of missile attacks from China, which has more than 1,600 ballistic missiles aimed at the island, according to experts.
