The iPhone-Dev Team has updated its popular Redsn0w tool to offer full iOS 6 compatibility, including an official Cydia app. Until now, the iOS 6 jailbreak was strictly for developers, and so Cydia was not installed automatically when jailbreaking an iOS 6 device. Now it’s ready for the public.
In addition to iOS 6 support, Redsn0w 0.9.15b1 adds support for restoring and downgrading certain devices from iOS 6 to older firmware versions, such as iOS 5, which can take advantage of an untethered jailbreak.
It’s worth noting that even after this update, Redsn0w can only perform a tethered jailbreak on devices running iOS 6. So if you’re not keen on the idea of plugging your device into your computer every time you need to boot it up, stick with iOS 5, or prepare for life on iOS 6 without a jailbreak.
If that doesn’t worry you, here’s the list of devices the latest Redsn0w release supports:
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch (4th gen)
A5-, A5x-, and A6-powered devices — that’s the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5, the fifth-generation iPod touch, and the second- and third-generation iPad — are not supported at this point.
Unlike the previous Redsn0w release, this one does not require you to find the iOS 6 IPSW file. Instead, it simply detects the firmware installed on your device, downloads the required file, and then works its magic. And as I mentioned above, this version puts Cydia on your device automatically.
