Steelers Player Profile: Shaun Suisham
Oct 10th 2012, 10:41

He is the leading scorer for the Steelers this year and kicked three field goals including the game-winner as time expired during Sunday’s win over the Eagles.  His name?  Shaun Suisham.  Yes, he is in his third season as a Steeler, but he is a kicker, not many people pay attention to the kicker.  That’s why today we look at Suisham and find out a little more about the kicker.

Who is Shaun Suisham?

The Canadian born kicker won all-conference honors in high school and took that success to kicking in college in the United States.  Suisham attended Bowling Green State University and was a four-year starter for the Falcons.  By the time his college career was over Suisham had set the school record with 361 points.

How did Suisham become a Steeler?

After a mid-season tryout with the team, Suisham signed with the Steelers to replace Jeff Reed in November of 2010.  Prior to joining the Steelers, he had kicked for the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins.  He did two stints with the Cowboys, his first go round with Dallas was during the 2005 season, he was signed and cut repeatedly for the next two seasons.  He then was signed by the Washington Redskins at the end of the 2006 season.  He remained in Washington until the 2009 season when Suisham missed a would be game-winner from 23 yards out against the undefeated Saints.  He was a free agent for just 13 days before once again re-signing with the Dallas Cowboys.  He became a free agent after the 2009 season and remained a free agent until the Steelers signed him.

His Career As A Steeler?

Suisham had immediate success with the Steelers.  In his first game he went 5-5 kicking extra points in a 35-3 win against the Raiders.  The following week, he made four field goals, all over 40 yards in distance including the game-winner in overtime in a 19-16 win in Buffalo.  Suisham made 14 of 15 attempts in his first season with the Steelers in 2010.  After struggling with his accuracy last season, Suisham has made all 17 kicks he has attempted this year, going 8-8 in field goal attempts and 9-9 on extra points.
