PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is hoping to raise $125 million to fund everything from a new high school north of the city to an outreach to evangelize fallen-away Catholics during a new campaign.
The diocese already has $25 million in commitments from larger donors and nine of its 204 parishes will participate in a pilot program for congregations to raise extra money starting in January. The other parishes will be phased into the program over two years and will have five years to raise the money.
Parishes will keep 40 percent of what they raise. The other 60 percent will be spent on a variety of projects, including endowing dental care for a Catholic Charities health clinic and $12 million – the largest share – for need-based tuition assistance for Catholic school students.
