NEW SEWICKLEY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — Police in Beaver County are investigating after a 9-year-old girl was injured at a party Saturday evening when she was reportedly mistaken for a skunk and accidentally shot.
According to the Beaver County Times, the incident happened at a Halloween party in the 300-block of Brewer Road in New Sewickley Township around 8:30 p.m.
The Beaver County Times reports the girl was wearing a costume that was black and also had on a black hat with a white tassel when a family member mistakenly thought she was an animal.
The girl was taken by medical helicopter to UPMC Children's Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the shoulder, according to the Beaver County Times. Her condition has not been released, but she was reportedly conscious while being taken to the hospital.
Authorities have not released the identities of the girl or the male family member.
The investigation continues.
