Panther Hollow: Street Continues To Pave The Way

PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) — Despite a rough start by the Panthers (0-3, 2-4), redshirt junior wide receiver Devin Street may be in the midst of his best season as Pitt’s 2012 campaign hits its midpoint.

“I think there is an improvement with every year I play. This year is a big thing for me, playing as a complete player. I think my blocking is better and [I'm] being stronger with the catch,” said Street, who has caught a team-best 39 passes for 514 yards and three TD’s. “It’s experience playing out there, and seeing different things, and carrying it over from practice to the game and I think I’m just progressing.”

Not only has Street developed mentally as a wide receiver, but he has also grown physically. Street, who currently stands at 203 pounds, was 190 pounds during training camp. He gives credit to his new lifting routine, and he says his bigger build helps him on the field.

“Just even catching the ball and getting hit I feel like I’m definitely stronger with the ball,” Street said.

If he continues at this pace, he has a chance at breaking records at Pitt.  In three years Street has accumulated 117 receptions and 1,586 yards. Turn-of-the-century receiver Latef Grim is the program’s all-time leader in catches with 178, and journeyman NFL-er Antonio Bryant, another Walt Harris protege, tops the receiving yardage list at 3,061.

In this weekend’s non-conference test he expects tough defense from Buffalo, but nothing the Panthers can’t handle:

Street is coming off a career-best 11 catches for 111 yards in last Saturday’s 45-35 loss to Big East rival Louisville, and he leads the Big East with an average of 6.5 receptions per game.

Kickoff between the visiting Panthers and the Bulls (0-3, 1-5) is set for 3:30 Saturday. Panther Preview, featuring Gregg Giannotti, begins that day at 12:30, on your flagship home for Pitt football, SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan.
